What is Cryotherapy?

Contrary to popular belief, cryotherapy as a concept isn’t a new thing. It actually dates back to 1978 where it was designed and used in Japan to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Since then, it has proven to be a holistic way of trimming weight and a great way of speeding up different forms of recovery.

During whole body cryotherapy, the body is exposed to extremely low temperatures of -140℃ for up to three minutes. The average skin temperature drops to around 10℃ while your core body temperature remains unchanged.

Once you enter the Cryo Chamber, you’re quickly fully-immersed to subzero temperatures via a fine-transfer of cryogenically-cooled mist.

What are the Different Types of Cryotherapy Treatments?

There are three main types of cryotherapy treatments. These are:

  • Whole body Cryotherapy takes place in the Cryo Chamber and is most frequently used for benefits like weight loss and pain relief.
  • Localised Cryotherapy – targets specific areas of the body and is often used for pain in problem areas as well as  beauty benefits, such as the reduction of cellulite.
  • Cryotherapy Facial – this method has many benefits, including improving skin condition and treating wrinkles.

The different methods all carry their own unique benefits that can improve a whole range of things.

How does it Help Reduce Weight?

The struggles of losing weight around ‘problem’ areas like your stomach and upper thighs are most definitely real. It seems like no matter how much you exercise or how well you eat, losing weight around these areas is just simply impossible. Fat falls off your body wherever it decides it wants to, so it’s not guaranteed that training a specific area means you’ll lose weight off that part of your body.

But, fear not, there are ways to enhance weight loss and whole body cryotherapy is one of them.

During Cryotherapy, your  body will start to enter fight or flight mode. Being exposed to unbelievably cold temperatures kickstarts this survival mode in your body. This survival mode will release adrenaline, boost your blood circulation and rush nutrients around your body in order to protect you from these extreme temperatures.

Your body is essentially tricked into thinking that it’s going to freeze. Like when you’re too cold in winter, you’ll start to shiver and internal processes will increase speed in order to help bolster body temperature. As a result of this, fat will start to burn much more quickly as your body needs more energy and nutrients in order to continue functioning in the extreme cold conditions.

Enhanced fat burning processes and increased metabolism both use up a great deal of energy, which is the reason for burning more calories. For the first few sessions, your body can stay in this enhanced state for up to eight hours afterwards. This is because your body is burning more energy than usual to help it return to your normal state.

Is there Any Proof of Successful Weight-Loss?

The Journal of Clinical Investigation published a study that found that people who spent two hours a day for six weeks in a 17℃ room burned more energy than those who were in a 27℃ room. Similarly, another study found that people who slept with the temperature set at 19℃ increased their levels of calorie burning by up to 42 percent and a further 10 percent boost in their metabolic rate. So if weight loss can occur  at a temperature difference of just 10℃, just think of the results you will achieve using cryotherapy that reaches the subzero temperatures of -140℃.

Is there Anything I Need to do Alongside Cryotherapy?

The above studies suggest that simply being exposed to colder conditions helps the body burn more calories. However, it’s not quite as simple as this.

It’s important to note that cryotherapy should be used to complement your existing health regime. Basically, cryotherapy shouldn’t be relied on solely for weight loss and will only leave you in the same boat of not seeing quick results, if it is.

Cryotherapy triggers the release of endorphins, which can leave your body feeling revitalised and fresh. These endorphins can help you bump up the intensity at the gym and speed up recovery from a sore body. Then, repeat. And see those results developing at a much quicker rate.

Cryotherapy allows you to train harder and more frequently. So, along with your healthy diet plan and testing gym routine, it can be the answer to your weight loss prayers.

How Often Should I Use Cryotherapy?

This all depends on you, your goals and how quickly you want to reach them. We recommend that over a two to three week period, if you want to maximise and maintain your benefits, that you should undergo seven to 10 sessions a couple of days apart, over a two-to-three week period.

You’ll start to feel refreshed right from the first treatment due to the natural release of endorphins and it will also put you in a great mood that can last for hours after the session has finished.
